Happy Anniversary Barley Mow Brewing

Many people don’t quite understand what a “nanobrewery” really means. Basically, it means a homebrewer has a few shiny barrels and occasionally a place to put them. Barley Mow Brewing Co. may have started small, tiny even! Now, they are anything but. Just 2 short years later, Jay and Colleen Dingman have grown a small storefront in Largo into a booming business with a stellar reputation for solid and innovative brews.

Their brews are highly sought after, and rarely seen, in the Tampa Bay area. Unique names, like Quackalope and Unkindness, may seem strange to others and certainly help the brewery stand apart, but they actuality have a deeper meaning to the creation of the brews and the brewery itself. Ever wonder why the name Barley Mow? Or why the raven represents the brewery? Jay Dingman tells us “ The name Barley Mow comes from an old song to toast the harvest of barley for making whiskey and beer. The raven comes from our flagship beer, The Unkindness, which means a group of ravens. We (Jay and Colleen ) were leaving Ybor after a fun night out and randomly she says to me ‘Did you know a group of ravens is called unkindness?’. The rest is history.”

On July 19th, Barley Mow Brewing Company will hold their 2nd anniversary party. It will be held at the brewery’s tasting room and tavern on West Bay Drive in Largo, FL from noon to 10pm. There will be 50 unique BMBC brews on draft, including a specially-made cask. The celebration will also have live music and food trucks.

This anniversary party is also a celebration for the upcoming expansion into their new 20,000 sq. foot production facility, also located in Largo, FL off Commerce Drive. This expansion will triple brewing capacity to 30 BBL and help launch the brews into the market during Fall of 2014.

Seven Tampa Bay Breweries Team Up for Collaboration

TAMPA, FL — Recently Southern Brewing & Winemaking (Southern) hosted a collaboration brew day in honor of the Bad A** Beerfest put on by Tampa Bay Brewing Company.

Tampa Bay Brewing Company (TBBC) teamed up with Southern, Cigar City Brewpub, Barley Mow, Coppertail, Green Bench, and Big Storm to brew six recipes that will be released at the Bad A** Beerfest on June 28th. All six brews will be on tap together under one tent at the festival.

The actual brewing took place at Southern on Friday, June 6th. Craft beer fans were invited to come hang out in the Southern biergarten and watch the brewing process. Southern was chosen as the brewday location due to the brewery’s unique small batch set-up that allows for six batches to be brewed at the same time.

The six collaborations brewed for the festival include:

TBBC and Cigar City Brewpub: Weizenbock
TBBC and Barley Mow: Big IPA
TBBC and Coppertail: Saison
TBBC and Green Bench: Belgian Dubbel
TBBC and Big Storm: Smoked Scotch Ale

For the final brew, TBBC, CCB Brewpub, Barley Mow, Coppertail, Greenbench, Big Storm, and Southern all independently chose some malt and hops and threw them together for a unique and surprising amalgam brew.

Southern was involved with all of brews that day, so one keg of each of the beers brewed for the festival will also be available on tap in the Southern taproom later this month.

Barley Mow Brewing Looks Towards Expansion

By: Mike Brassfield, Tampa Bay Times Staff Writer

Jay and Colleen Dingman have a really serious problem. You see, they just can’t make enough beer.

The married couple owns Barley Mow Brewing Co., a Largo brewpub. Smaller than a microbrewery, it’s a “nanobrewery” that features an in-room brewery setup located mere feet from the bar.

They brew a couple dozen kinds of ales, ambers, porters and stouts in small batches — just enough to keep beer flowing through the bar’s taps. They also distribute it to other pubs. Tampa Bay’s craft beer scene has been good to them, so the demand for their product has outgrown the supply.

“We brew almost every day here, and we can’t keep up,” Jay Dingman said. “It’s a good problem to have, but it’s a problem nevertheless.”

After three years in business, they’re hugely expanding their operation, shifting into mass distribution of their various brews. They are buying a 20,000-square-foot industrial building on Commerce Drive, just off Missouri Avenue in Largo.

“We’re putting in a brewery that’s 15 times the size of what we’re working with now,” he said. “What we brew in a day over there will be more than we brew in two months in our current location.”

Both avid home brewers and veterans of the hospitality industry, the Dingmans opened their bar in 2011 at 518 West Bay Drive, the former home of an Irish pub. At first it was just the two of them brewing and tending bar. Now they have seven employees.
